Complete renovation of clay lump cottages

The Brief

Batt Building Services was entrusted with the complete renovation of two clay lump cottages in East Harling. The client sought to modernise the cottages with new interiors, updated infrastructure, and improved exteriors, all while respecting and preserving the character and history of both properties. Maintaining the unique clay lump material while integrating modern amenities and finishes presented a particular challenge that required our expertise and care.

The Solution

To deliver on the client’s vision, Batt Building Services created a comprehensive renovation plan. Key elements of this house renovation included:

  • Complete Gutting: The cottages were completely gutted to prepare for new installations while retaining their structural integrity.
  • New Electrical and Plumbing Systems: A full rewire of the electrical systems and an updated plumbing network brought the cottages up to modern standards.
  • Replastering with Care: The interior walls were replastered with a focus on maintaining the clay lump material alongside necessary updates.
  • Interior Modernisation: Each cottage was fitted with a new kitchen and bathroom, designed to offer modern conveniences while blending harmoniously with the cottages’ rustic charm.
  • External Lime Rendering: The cottages’ exteriors were re-rendered with traditional lime to maintain the historic look and support the clay lump construction.
  • Final Touches and Updates: Landscaping enhanced the surrounding area, while new fascias, soffits, and chimneys restored the cottages’ external details.
